Born in England and raised in Ontario Rebecca Chaperon went from drawing on the walls to working primarily in watercolor and acrylic. In her work you will see reoccurring themes of statuesque architecture, catholic school children (of which she once was one) the undead and, of course, sentient robots. Inside these moments she bows down to subtle experimentation with washes and various application of her media. She was schooled at Kwantlen and at Emily Carr. This is highly narrative work that entertains ideas of connection/disconnection between beings. It remains both deliciously dark and tongue-in-cheek.
Here are a few little factoids about me:
-many of the buildings in my pieces are buildings that I feel an affinity for...some from Vancouver, some from ancient schoolhouse photos, some from the town I grew up in, St. Catherines Ontario.
-some people ask why robots? I say why not, they are so rich in metaphor...resembling physically human attributes but expected to be empty. Which is why I get so much out of the robot characters from Issac Assimov's stories..they are surprising within the boundaries given to them, even when they are following those boundaries. All of their actions though are just a reflection of humanity..it's deep!
-I like to surprise myself when I make art...so often I work on many different series at the same time...rather than beginning and ending something in a similar style. I would rather leave something open ended so I can return to it. I explore parallel themes at the same time to hold boredom at bay.
